"I just wanted to share with you a special experience I and some of my advanced students had in December.
I think I've mentioned to you that I sing with a choir (S.D. Master Chorale), and often in German! I invited my students to attend Beethoven's 9th Symphony, where they heard the beautiful Schiller poem put to Beethoven's powerful and beautiful music, played by the San Diego Symphony at Copley Hall downtown. I had already introduced my students to the poem in class, so they really appreciated hearing it in musical form! Plus, they were proud that their teacher was also singing in the choir on stage! The father of one of the students took this picture, of me and my students after the concert. Definitely a moment of "Freude" for me! They'll never forget the phrase, "Freude schoener Goetterfunken"! By the way, our school German Club paid for the students' tickets.
I was also able to take the whole class to the San Diego Art Museum, and the Timkin Art Museum for a lesson in pre- and post Martin Luther art!
I know that all around town in German classes, there are many more neat experiences happening every day, made possible by all of the German teachers! It would be nice to hear more of what is going on - do we have a discussion forum by any chance?
Take care, and I hope to see you soon!
Best,
Mary Dukas" |
